What are the blades on a plow called? ›

Moldboard. The actual plow blade. The moldboard is available in various materials such as steel, stainless steel or poly.

Straight-Position

This position is normally used for backdragging-with the blades positioned directly in front of the vehicle. For example, to remove snow from the edge of a building, raise the blade and drive up to the building. Then lower the blade and back up- pulling snow away from the building.

A number of companies, such as Husqvarna, sell sturdy plowing attachments designed for specific models. But unless you have a high-end lawn or garden tractor, you could shorten the life of your tractor by pushing a plow or snow-blower attachment against significant snow. 2. Slush Plows Attachments For Snow Blowers

Installing a slush plow onto your snow blower will allow you to easy plow up to 5 inches of slush or snow when the slush/snow is too wet and heavy for your snow blower to work properly.

Single-stage blowers are great for small areas that have a flat surface and receive less than 12 inches of snow. If you have to remove more than 12-inch-deep snow piles frequently, you should purchase a different unit type because a single-stage unit is not up to that task.

Most modern plows will have a float mode which allows the plow to move up and down over bumpy or uneven terrain. Double-tap on the down button to put the blade into float mode. If your plow doesn't have a float mode, simply press the down button until the bottom edge of the plow touches the ground.

Snow plow blades should generally be replaced every five to ten years, depending on use and wear. Worn-out blades just can't effectively remove snow and ice.

A steel blade is the most commonly used type of snow plow blade. For most municipalities, steel snowplow blades are their first choice to remove snow and ice in winter due to low initial costs. Steel blades are ideal for removing packed snow on the roads without using salt or chemical.

The plow bottom is the business end of a moldboard plow. The principal parts are the share, shin, moldboard, landside, frog, and brackets (Figure 2a, b).

The first part is an asymmetric plow share, which cuts the soil horizontally. The second part is a coulter, which cuts the soil vertically. The third part is a mouldboard, which turns the cut sods aside to create a deep furrow (Mokyr, 1990, Richerson, 2001).
